Obtain a Full Terpene Profile with our Adavanced Capabilities

Terpenes are a diverse group of aromatic compounds found in various plants, including cannabis, that contribute to their distinctive flavors and scents. Testing for terpenes is a vital quality control measure to ensure the consistency and quality of cannabis products and natural health products. Terpenes not only influence the sensory attributes of a product but also play a role in its therapeutic effects. Accurate terpene profiling helps verify product claims and ensures that products meet consumer expectations.

Using Gas Chromatography coupled to a Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) allows for the separation of multiple terpenes with relative ease. We also offer custom services such as uniformity and stability studies to assess how stable and well distributed the terpene content is.

Reference Methods

  • Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detector: Accurately quantifies over 70 major terpenes found in cannabis with a detection as low as 0.001% by weight.

Summary

Terpene testing is essential for verifying the flavor, aroma, and therapeutic potential of cannabis, natural health products, and food ingredients. By utilizing advanced analytical techniques like Gas Chromatography (GC) and following industry guidelines, manufacturers can ensure that their products meet quality and regulatory standards. This  testing process helps maintain product integrity, enhances consumer satisfaction, and supports the overall safety and efficacy of products. Whether in the cannabis industry, natural health products, or food sector, terpene testing is a critical component of quality assurance and consumer satisfaction.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Terpenes determine the overall aroma and flavor of cannabis, and may also influence the effects of cannabinoids.  Individual strains have specific profiles as well, which can be used to identify and characterize them.

While there can be over a hundred unique terpenes within a given sample, there are a few major ones which are always present:  alpha-Bisabolol, alpha-Humulene, alpha-Pinene, beta-Caryophyllene, beta-Myrcene, beta-Pinene, d-Limonene. Selina-3,7(11)-diene and Selina-4(15) 7(11)-diene are less often mentioned but also occur in high amounts.

Mass Spec is useful for positively identifying terpenes, however the analysis can become complex. The resin content in cannabis can also lead to more instrument maintenance while running on MS, so for these reasons, FID is preferred.

While the majority of our terpene profiling is done on dried cannabis, we can also determine terpene content in hash, oils, and extracts.
